Following the Sunnyside and MacArthur school bidding, I was placed on another project in the Berkeley School District, the Riley Intermediate and Northlake Middle School additions and renovations. I was added during the Design Development phase and finished during the bidding process. Acting as a design support staff, I received tasks from my Job Captain Adam Moore and Project Manager, Jessalyn Kelly. This project had a longer design timeline, which meant a smaller team; in fact it was just Adam and I working on this project together all throughout the Construction Document phase. Being a smaller team, I was given far more tasks and learned much more about detailing, code, and Revit than my past projects.
This project was very challenging, only because this was my first project renovating an existing building. This project included a full renovation of the existing Riley Intermediate School and Northlake Middle School with an addition connecting these two schools. The addition, being at 15,000 SF, was intented to be a community space, housing a large gymnasium and cafeteria, intended to be a mixed-use space. Communicating with my Job Captain was crucial, since I was working from Minneapolis still, I sometimes required additional photos or owner questions to be answered. This project was also my first experience with projects going over budget and requiring drawing changes through addenda. This was a great introduction to Construction Administration and understanding the teamwork between architects and construction managers.
As a team, we separated tasks between exterior and interior items. I was on the interior team, focusing on floor plan tags, dimensions, details, as well as interior elevations, reflected ceiling plans, schedules, and finish plans. Being a new school building, on a large lot and little existing elements, much of the challenges came from the size of this building. I recall laying out these drawings and we ended up splitting the school into five (5) sections, ten (10) areas when including the upper level. To this date, this project is one of the largest architectural projects I worked on at Wold and in my career.
